What it is
Carnival runs for the days before Ash Wednesday (10 February 2027). Samba schools compete in the Sambadrome, while free street parties called blocos take over neighbourhoods.
Tips for going on a budget
- Sambadrome tickets vary hugely in price by sector and night.
- Book accommodation months in advance; prices rise sharply.
- Carry only what you need to street parties; pickpocketing is common.
