What it is
Loy Krathong is celebrated across Thailand by floating candle-lit krathongs on rivers and lakes. In Chiang Mai it coincides with Yi Peng, when lanterns, parades and lights fill the old city and the Ping River.
Tips for going on a budget
- Chiang Mai hotels fill up months ahead and prices rise sharply. Book as early as you can.
- Mass sky-lantern releases are now ticketed events at set venues; public releases are restricted, so check local rules.
- Choose a krathong made of natural materials like banana leaf or bread.
