Travel money tips
Bad exchange rates and hidden fees quietly add 3 to 10% to a trip. A few simple rules avoid most of them.
Always pay in the local currency
When a card machine or ATM offers to charge you in your home currency, say no. This 'dynamic currency conversion' usually uses a poor exchange rate.
Use a low-fee card
Some banks and travel cards charge no foreign transaction fees and use near market rates. Check your card's fees before you travel.
Withdraw cash wisely
Use bank ATMs rather than standalone machines, withdraw larger amounts less often if your bank charges per withdrawal, and avoid airport exchange counters for large amounts.
Carry a little cash
Markets, street food, small guesthouses and tips are often cash only. Keep a small amount in local currency and a backup card stored separately.
