How to eat well on a budget while travelling
Food can be the most enjoyable part of a trip, and it doesn't have to be expensive.
Eat your big meal at lunch
Many countries offer set lunch menus (menú del día in Spain, prato do dia in Portugal, teishoku in Japan, thali in India) that cost much less than the same food at dinner.
Go where it's busy with locals
Busy street stalls, hawker centres and food courts have fresh food, quick turnover and fair prices. Places with picture menus in five languages near big sights usually cost more.
Use supermarkets and bakeries
Breakfast and snacks from a supermarket or bakery save money every day. A hostel or apartment kitchen lets you cook a few dinners.
Drink smart
Alcohol and bottled drinks add up fast. Carry a refillable bottle where tap water is safe, and check local advice where it is not.
Stay safe
Choose freshly cooked, hot food, and be careful with salads, ice and tap water where hygiene is uncertain.
